Julian van de Velde graduated in Juni 2005 at the University of Tilburg, specialisation Civil law. Subsequently, he went to Australia to study a Master of Laws at the University of Queensland. During his study at the University of Queensland he specialised in Maritime law. After he graduated he worked 15 months as a claims handler for a P&I correspondent in Sydney, Australia. Starting 13th May 2008 Julian joined Smallegange. He was admitted to the bar in July 2008. In 2011 Julian successfully passed the post academic course Marine Insurance at the Erasmus Academy.
At Smallegange Julian deals with maritime casualties, limitation proceedings, ship arrests, cargo claims and insurance disputes. Julian acts for shipowners, charterers, logistic services providers, insurers, P&I Clubs, insurance brokers, trading companies and companies operating in the shipping industry.
From 2012 to 2015 Julian was the lecturer of the Master course “Marine Insurance Law” at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. The course “Marine Insurance Law” is one of the courses of the Master Maritime and Transport Law.
Since 1 January 2016 Julian is Partner at Smallegange.
Julian is a member of the following associates:
- Dutch Maritime and Transport Law Association
- Young Rotterdam Port Association.
Julian van de Velde has registered the following principal (and secondary) legal practice areas in the Netherlands Bar’s register of legal practice areas (rechtsgebiedenregister):
- Transport and trade law
Based on this registration, he is required to obtain ten training credits per calendar year in each registered principal legal practice area in accordance with the standards set by the Netherlands Bar.
